After loosing his 19 year old daughter to cancer, Rafael Segovia began his search for God. He began to help a few homeless people that he found who were trying to find their way after using drugs, alcohol, and who had recently been released from prison. He realized they didn’t know how to start over after severed ties to family and friends, due to their addictions. They have no one to help them get back on their feet. Most end up repeating the past and end up back in the lifestyles that lead nowhere. Rafael himself was a former drug and alcohol user, and had also been in prison. He knew he could help these people get their paperwork, schooling, clothing, shelter, and food; in order to help them get a job and start a new life. He began, one by one, to “adopt” them for a time; to give them what was needed to help them get on their way. His only rule was that they had to attend church with him on Sundays. He also wanted to help them find God so they could also receive the spiritual help they so desperately needed. He began to visit inmates in prison and work with them before they got out and ended up on the streets. He witnessed to them about his own life story and how God was helping him have a better life. He finally founded “Overcome Ministries” and registered as a 501(c)(3) ministry so he could accept help from donors. He feels that his search for God lead to his calling in life: Helping people recover from their past.
